An Essential Guide to The New 2021 Rolex Explorer 36mm
Words by Will Halbert
The Explorer has long been the under-the-radar, if-you-know-you-know option for those who like their watches to come with a little understated utility as opposed to any in-your-face ostentation.

Which is exactly what makes the all-new 36mm iteration of the Rolex Explorer (ref:124270) a welcome addition to the Rolex roster. This is old-school, no-nonsense horology at its best. The 36mm case eschews the long-standing, bigger-is-better philosophy in favour of more modest wrist proportions. The same goes for the lugs, which have been slimmed down a touch for a slighter, more subtle profile. It’s an expertly elegant turn from Rolex, one that sees the Explorer sit more in line with the humble proportions of your classic tool watches of yesteryear.

While the chassis is classic, under the hood is anything but. The new Rolex Explorer sports the latest, COSC-certified Cal.3230 movement, which not only boasts an accuracy of +/- 2 seconds per day but also wields an impressive power reserve of 70 hours. No mean feat.
Fear not, though. For those wanting a little more bling for their buck, the new-generation Explorer also comes in a show-stopping, yellow Rolesor variant. This bi-metal option uses house-forged, 18 ct gold to craft the bezel, winding crown, and centre links of the bracelet. The case and outer links of the are made of Rolex’s famous Oystersteel.
As is the standard with all Rolex watches, the all-new 36mm Explorer carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which ensures excellent performance on the wrist.

The new-generation, 36mm Explorer is a welcome addition to Rolex’s prestigious line-up. One that – in true Explorer fashion – pays respects to the brand’s rich heritage whilst also forging new and exciting paths ahead.
