Get the Look: Tony Montana
Al Pacino in Scarface
Far from the overcoats and fedoras of the original, 1983’s answer for Scarface is all about excess and extravagance when it comes to fitting out its gun-slinging gang members. Set on the vibrant streets of Miami, Florida, Scarface tells the tale of Cuban ex-con Tony Montana who lands on the shores of the US to find himself in the midst of the 1980s cocaine boom. In true gangster style, he makes his way up the food chain, facing the trials and conflicts of mob life and unknowingly setting himself up for a fall from the top.
When we first meet Tony, we are graced with a full 360 camera pan of him, his outfit and his overall bolshie attitude. Playing a lively game of one-upmanship with a room full of Floridian cops, Tony sports a tropical, toucan-printed shirt as loud and confident as the man himself. While typically reserved for pot-bellied, grilling Dads at family barbecues, this style of shirt hasn’t always had the coolest reputation. However, Tony’s use of it as a symbol of powerful defiance has redefined its underlying message and paved the way for other rebellious peacocks such as Tyler Durden and True Romance’s Clarence Worley. Paired with some more understated items, Tony’s shirt is the perfect starter piece on his journey towards more flamboyant sartorial endeavours. It’s also great for just getting a bit of sun.
