Get the Look: Ron Stallworth
John David Washington in BlacKkKlansman

When it comes to red carpet style, there’s certainly no other director that does it as well as Spike Lee. He’s often decked out in a purple ensemble, combining the formality of a suit with some streetwear flair, and making it clear to the rest of Hollywood that he’s not one to shy away from making a statement. Luckily, his films are no different. His reputation for addressing the African-American experience on film has propelled him to become a figurehead of black cinema and a trailblazer in a necessary move away from the blaxploitation pics of the 1970s. One of the more recent additions to his socially-conscious body of work hit the screens in 2018 and told the true story of Ron Stallworth, an African-American police officer that infiltrated the Klu Klux Klan with the help an undercover white colleague.
In his usual fashion, BlacKkKlansman saw Lee define his characters through their clothing. Much like Mookie’s Brooklyn Dodgers jersey in Do the Right Thing (1989), the BlacKkKlansman costumes are embedded with a clear sense of cultural heritage. Powerful collars, shearling jackets and jewelled-toned rollnecks round out the wardrobe of the smooth-talking cop and are all aesthetically reminiscent of the Black Power movement of the era. In true Spike Lee style, they’re also as cool as ever. Get your own empowering look with the links below.
