Get the Look: The Whitman Brothers

Wes Anderson. A name hard to bring up without further discussion of aesthetic prowess. A modern day auteur in his own right and a style expert with an astute eye for those minor details. He’s a director who’s managed to build up a back catalogue of cinematic gems carefully adorned with candy-coloured details and a number of primped-up outfits to match. His characters are often dressed to the nines, sporting tailored outerwear and hypernormal accessories that appear perfectly passable in the whimsical worlds in which they live. One of his more toned down feats of fashion, however, comes in the form of his collaboration with Marc Jacobs for the 2007 comedy-drama, The Darjeeling Limited.
At the time of production, Jacobs was the artistic director of Luis Vuitton and signed on to design the suits and luggage sets for the three leading men. The film centres around three brothers travelling on a luxury Indian train together, as part of an effort to bond with each other following the accidental death of their father. With each brother sporting their own colour of shirt, Anderson still allows for personal and metaphorical dressing among his muted selection. Adrien Brody in white, the more refined of the three; Jason Schwartzman as the literal black sheep of the family; and Owen Wilson, the grounded, sandy coloured in-between. Their matching grey flannel suits, a fitting symbol of their brotherhood, contrast with their colourful and chaotic environment which gradually embellishes their outfits with complimentary bandages and traditional Indian garlands. While a pair of shorts and a t-shirt may be more agreeable with the country’s hot climate, these brothers certainly embody the term travelling in style.
